Require gun-owners to join the National Guard

Joining the National Guard as a requirement for owning a gun has a number of benefits, and complies with the Second Amendment.

Let me address the Second Amendment issue first. Just as a reminder, the Second Amendment reads:

“ A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

Each of the States of the United States regulate the National Guard, and I would suggest the National Guard represents a standard for a well-regulated Militia. “National Guard” became a standard nationwide militia title in 1903, and specifically indicated reserve forces under mixed state and federal control since 1933. If someone considers that the Federal Government as too much influence over the National Guard then a militia regulated by the gun owner’s State of residence would satisfy the term “A well-regulated Militia.”

Requiring that everyone who owns a gun must serve for some specified amount of time in the National Guard or a militia regulated by the owner’s State of residence for some specified term of service comply with Second Amendment.

Most companies allow employees time off work to serve in the National Guard as the National Guard requires a modest amount of time away from work on an average monthly basis. Sometimes National Guard may require a month off work to participate in maneuvers, and most companies make allowances for that.

Serving in the National Guard would provide time to teach the responsibilities of owning a gun as well as time to become proficient in the use of a fire-arm.

Additionally, requiring the gun-owners serve in the National Guard would increase the ranks of the National Guard at a time when natural disasters require significant personnel to give aid and assistance to the victims of that disaster. Having a large number of people serving in the National Guard would offer a large resource for use in a natural disaster, and that would benefit every tax-payer in the United States as all the people who pay taxes to the United States bear the cost of natural disasters.

So many people who own guns profess patriotism, and therefore should welcome the opportunity to service their country as a member of the National Guard as a consequence of owning a gun.
